True Story. A religion teacher assigned her class an essay on what makes a good Christian. One student wrote about praying nightly, say no to abortion, banning gay marriage, and donating money. The other student wrote about talking to God and allowing people to enjoy their lives, and supporting gay marriage. The day the teacher was to hand the papers back, she called up the second student and told him she would pray for him when he went to hell. The student asked why would he be going to hell, and why he got an F on his paper. The teacher told him that Catholicism is against gay marriage. The student looked at her for a minute, then said aloud, "I'm gay." The teacher kicked him out of class as if he had said fuck or worshiped Satan. A girl in the back of class who had a boyfriend and was obviously straight got up and left too.

If you would leave the classroom, repost this. It doesn't matter if you're straight, bi, or gay. It doesn't matter if you're catholic or not. Everyone is a human being and deserves happiness.

Speaking of true stories: [livejournal.com profile] megaffe told me that a friend of a former teacher of mine had a friend who was travelling in American with her husband and was extremely pregnant. Anyway, she went into labour so of course they hooned off to the hospital, as you do- I believe police are generally fairly sympathetic about this kind of thing. But they were pulled over and the policeman asked the husband for ID. So the husband reaches into his jacket for his wallet, the policeman thinks he's going for a gun, and shoots him dead in front of his pregnant wife.

Um. Believe it or not? ;)

It would be interesting to find out both when and where those stories took place. Mmm?

I agree. But I still posted the first one, because I'm against bigotry. If you're a Christian and you act like that, you're exactly like the people your saviour was rebelling against.

*g* Me too. But- well, the second one's interesting, and the first one, as [livejournal.com profile] miriamus said, is less about the story and more about the action of posting it.

I never managed to get kicked out of class despite saying "fuck" regularly, worshipping Satan and being gay. What is this world coming to? Moral decay of society and all that.

*disapproving tsk* You must try harder, young man. Not even managing to get kicked out of class? What are worshippers of Satan coming to, that's what I want to know.

Americans do tend to be pretty jumpy. I like the bit in "Bowling for Coulmbine" where the animated bullet talkes you through American history. Rather a different perspective than the one taught in AP US History. Although apparantly you're supposed to tell the cops what you're doing every time you make a move. Like when my mom got pulled over for speeding she was like, "I'll get my resitration. It's in the glove compartment." and "My lisence is in my purse which is on the backseat. I'll get it for you now." She said that's how you're supposed to address cops because if you don't tell them what you're doing, they'll thinkg you're going for a gun or something.

I believe the first one- I see viewpoints like that in some of my classmates at school. (Like Ellie, for example, who's obsessed with LOTR but won't read HP because it's got wizardry in it. She also refused to admit that a deck of Tarot cards existed.) Thankfully, the teachers aren't like that.

:-/ See, in New Zealand, if a cop wants to carry a gun- well, short explanation is s/he's not allowed to. I think they have guns in their cars, maybe, but to use them they have to do a bunch of stuff- we're really anti-gun in New Zealand, thank god. This kind of thing, if it's true, wouldn't be able to happen, because there's no way the cop would have the gun on him at all. Also, he probably wouldn't assume the guy was going for a gun, what with him, you know, having a pregnant wife in the backseat and all.

I think the first one is a way more likely scenario. I don't know if it'd happn but it sure could, I guess.

It would be dangerous to assume that any given police offier is not armed while on duty. Especially plainclothes officers. Patrol cars do carry guns and officers are authorised to use the firearms if confronted with an appropriate situation (say, a nutter with a shotgun). Once upon a time, having to get permission to carry a gun was a big deal but it happens a lot more now. Armed police are a reality in New Zealand - not every copper on the street, it's true, and they prefer not to show weapons if they can manage it, but they're there.

Like I said- in the car. And I know they're authorised to do them- but pulling over a car is not, I think, generally considered the appropriate situation, am I right?

You miss my point. Perhaps I can be clearer. There is a 90% probability that any given police car will contain firearms in the boot. The probability is lower but still well above zero that individual officers will be carrying guns on their person as well, especially if they are plainclothes detectives.

When I was much younger, I was part of a KAOS group (Killing As Organised Sport - http://www.kaos.org.nz/ (http://www.kaos.org.nz/)) and I wanted a shoulder holster for my water pistol. There was a leather shop up the top of Cuba St where they made stuff to order. I went in and described what I wanted, thinking it would be a special deal and they'd have to design it from scratch. He pulled one out of a drawer and said "Is this what you mean? We make them for the D's". I couldn't afford it, and I went away having lost a little of my innocence about the Police. I had always thought they were totally unarmed as well. Then again, I never thought they'd pack rape anyone.

On your second point, the appropriateness of a situation depends on a lot of things - for example, why are they pulling the car over? Does the driver match a description of a known felon who uses violence? Has the car been reported stolen? These days, they have to be ready for anything. Two officers killed in the line of duty in the last few years come to mind - the one in Napier, killed on the side of the road, and the one in Palmerston North, killed by a teenager who had abducted his girlfriend and her mother. What's "routine", anymore?

It wasn't his ID, it was something for his wife - painkiller perhaps? - and he idn't tell the police what he was doing - as Miramus said, big nono. I think this is true, but as I can't remember which teacher told me, I can;t recall why i think it is true!

Well, I wouldn't, but I had it from MEg, who's a sceptic of the first order, and said that she had a reason to believe it. But now she doesn't remember what the reason was, so, well. ;D
