AND ALSO. I am reading commentary on this one thing and wow, I had no idea so many people didn't know that Bob Dylan wrote & recorded All Along the Watchtower before Jimi Hendrix did it. I have no idea why this is annoying me, but it really, really is.

ETA: OH! I was looking at the wiki page and apparently the slide guitar solo [in the Jimi version] between the second and final verses? Done with a CIGARETTE LIGHTER. Holy fucking shit, that man was a genius. So cool.

One more ETA, with feeling: Does anyone out there have "Axis, Bold as Love"? I do not, and it's making me unhappy. Oops, yes I do!

Most people don't know who originally wrote 'Hey Joe' either.

Or 'Black Betty'

Oh, I feel your pain. I'll be your baby tonight falls into a similar category.

I have a nasty feeling that a lot of people don't know that Hallelujah is a Leonard Cohen job either. I guess it's the flipside of imitation as the sincerest form of flattery.

Yeah, and everybody thinks that Knocking on Heaven's Door is a Guns n' Roses original, when that too was penned by the amazing Mr Dylan as well.

And I think Dylan recorded House of the Rising Sun before The Animals as well.

And You Really Got Me was done by the Kinks before van Halen.

Aw, and if you were interested, U2

pressed send to early

*sigh* Continuing on....

U2 did a fantastic live cover of AATWT back in the day...bloody good. I actually prefer it to the Dylan original to be frank, and that doesn't happen often! ;) I've only ever heard the Hendrix version once.

I'm just happy you know who Jimi and Bob are!

I remember going to a party many years ago at my sister's place (early 80's). The Flying Lizard's version of money was playing and there were a couple of late teens expounding on what a cool original song it was. So I snuck over to the stereo and put "With the Beatles" on, just to show them.

"Wow!" said one. "Someone's covered it already! Not bad but not as good as the original."

You want original, I thought rooting through my sister's collection of aging 45's to unearth the old Motown classic from 1960 by Barrett Strong. They noticed me putting it on, clocked the obvious age of the disc and shut up. Pathetic, I know, but I felt good about it.

BTW, according to Wikipedia, "the song has been covered by a plethora of artists, including Buddy Guy, The Beatles, John Lennon during his solo career ,The Kingsmen, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Flying Lizards, Shonen Knife, Secret Machines, The Sonics, The Smashing Pumpkins, Hanson, Cheap Trick, Josie and the Pussycats, Great White, The Blues Brothers, The Avengers (band), and Motown labelmates The Supremes, Jr. Walker & the All Stars and The Miracles."

AATWT, on the other hand, has been covered by "many artists, including:
Affinity, B-Real, Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica), Brewer & Shipley, Bryan Ferry, Calvin Russell, Charmine, Dave Mason, Dave Matthews Band, Dionysis Savvopoulos, Dream Syndicate, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Everlast, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Funkstar De Luxe, Giant Sand, Gov't Mule, The Grateful Dead, Howie Day, The Indigo Girls, Jeff Healey, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jenn Adams, John Mellencamp, Keller Williams, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Kronos Quartet, Lenny Kravitz, Michael Angelo Batio, Michael Hedges, Nancy Wilson, Neil Young, Nine Days, P.O.S., The Paperboys, Pat McGee Band, Paul Weller, Pearl Jam, Phish, The Presidents of the United States of America, Prince, Richie Havens, Robin Trower, Run DMC, Rusted Root, Steven Colbert, Taj Mahal, The TDKs, Tom Landa & The Paperboys, Träd, Gräs och Stenar, TSOL, U2, Wide Mouth Mason, and XTC" and has its own entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Along_the_Watchtower for those playing along at home

I <3 wikipedia!!

I now feel a burning need to locate the versions by the Kronos Quartet, Lenny Kravitz, the Indigo Girls and XTC...

I just kinda assume Bob Dylan wrote and recorded everything first. Like, any National Anthem or Disney song? Bob Dylan did it first. Totally.

I've never read the liner notes to Rattle & Hum!

Nor did I until tonight, but they're actually obscure. AATWT is not obscure. Also, when I say many people don't know, I mean I observed a lengthy comment discussion about the "Jimi Hendrix Original" before someone stepped up to say, "...uh..." that's what disturbed me, because the population of LJ is such that there were definitely a lot more people reading the conversation than contributing and none of them knew.

But the thing about Hallelujah is everyone at least knows it's a cover, like I doubt that many think the Jeff Buckley/Rufus Wainwright/flavour of the month is the original, you know? :-/

Knockin' on Heaven's Door is exactly the kind of thing I mean - although, heh, I don't actually know the G&R version all that well, just the Clapton version, heh. :D

My brother is basically obsessed with Jimi Hendrix and has been for... a very long time. My favourite band was Simon and Garfunkel for a really, really, really long time. We are very retro, although actually we never listened to much Dylan. A lot of Marley, though, heh, and, indeed, Clapton, all those old fogies.

Hahah, awesome anecdote! Yay for the smackdown. I have been having heaps of fun rooting through Wiki's top charts lists looking for the top songs/albums of 97/98 for, um, a themed Harry Potter& The Deathly Hallows fanmix. Um.

Rattle and Hum...fucking brilliant album. Sez me.

Would you call 'Hey Joe' obscure?
From: [identity profile] amarynth.livejournal.com
Oh, right, duly noted.

Alright, how about 'Alabama Song'?
