And a minor personal note: I'm not around much at the moment. If I owe you a drabble or a conversation or a comment, I'll hope to get around to it as soon as possible and I'm sorry for the delays.

May is New Zealand Music Month and [livejournal.com profile] jayest has been uploading some NZ music to share with her flist. I’ll admit that my flist is mostly New Zealanders, but I think there’s still, you know, stuff to share. So have some music! I may or may not do this again this month, we’ll see. Today: roots reggae and some alternative pop music, featuring: Kora, Barnaby, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Goldenhorse, Strawpeople, Lucid 3 and maybe some others.

roots reggae and funky torchpop! )

That’s all for today; I may or may not do this again later this month, but if I did it would be Pasifika artists and probably some good old classics of Kiwi Rock ‘n’ Roll.

I was browsing around looking for Kora lyrics (no luck, no surprise) and instead I found amplifier.co.nz, an NZ music online store AND database of artists/albums, with snippets of relevant tracks. But that's not the cool part. The cool part is the music videos. Come on, come on, who remembers King Kapisi's Screems from da old plantation? It's on has Nesian Mystik in Tino Rangatiratanga t-shirts!. Kora's newish track Politician is there too, which I'm happy to admit is cool to me mostly because hey, that's Wellington Railway Station! And look, he's walking towards the cenotaph! (Interestingly, they don't actually show the war memorial in the video, even though he's right there. Hm.) Adeaze and Scribe continue to make NZ hiphop palatable to me where US stuff isn't (Thank you, Dawn Raid entertainment; thank you, South Auckland and Canterbury, for not being total jerks and loving each other. I wish they had Stand Up because I love that one.)

... I just realised that Scribe's album, "The Crusader"? Scribe's from Christchurch, right. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to name your debut album about your hard life and how you made it big after your, you know, rugby team.

I love the smell of NZ music in the morning. *uploads frenetically*

I changed the order of questions in this one, and now I think it tells a really defined story. A horrible story, but hey, it's a story.

I recently uploaded a bunch of Bic Runga B-sides and raretracks for a friend and figured I'd share them here, because these are all difficult enough to find if you live in NZ and probably impossible overseas. Also, a Stellar* album, because it's not available even on Aussie iTunes. IF ANY OF THESE ARE AVAILABLE WHERE YOU LIVE, PLEASE TRY TO BUY THEM.

B-sides and raretracks )

Please let me know if any of these links are broken or the files are wrong, 'cos both lots were uploaded as gifts so I should, like, fix that. :)

Remember The Frankenstein Meme? Right, so entry number 1.5! Now with album cover!

I have an assessment for every day of the week this week (and two on Friday) so I'm positively not around. Think of me in lots of agony. :P

I came across The Frankenstein Meme while surfing, and, heck, you know how I feel about music memes. So! Mixlist and upload links under the cut!

*phew* This took me hours, and I changed my choices about twelve times. I think I should be a little lower-maintenance… Awesome fun though.

Bic Runga's new website would be pretty cool if it idn't need Flash 8 or something- it actually has about eight or so songs on there to listen to that are good-quality. If you're a fan you should check them out.

Also, according to her discography, these are the only tracks by her that I don't have and have never heard:
Somewhere in the Night, Winning Arrow LP. (I might buy this one, since I probably could find it. Or I could hang on till the limited edition version of Birds comes out, because it might be on there... man I hope it comes out soon! The BC limited edition came out the next year...)
Something Good (Submariner mix) from the Something Good LP- okay, I've obviously heard the song, but I'd like to hear this version...
All Fall Down, Suddenly Strange LP- the chances of my finding this are slim, I think.
Interstellar Over Drive Mix, from the Roll Into One LP- Roll Into One is a funny song for a single.... I've never heard this but I'd love it. Sounds like it's another remix of Drive but hey, I can't get enough...
I Don't Mean It- Sway LP. I dunno what this one would be about. :P

Okay, how can I say this? I would really, really love copies of these. If any of you have them and could yousendit.com them to me, I could swap it with you for pretty much anything else in her collection. I love Bic's work and I buy her albums, but these are all minor tracks off singles and I can't get them any other way... oh, flist, if you have any idea where I might go...

Music meme

Because my love for music memes is deep and wide, plus I leave Wellington in five days. Also I'm obsessively refreshing [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock for the second 14 Valentines story, so hey. Ganked off [livejournal.com profile] sennical.

Open iTunes/iPod or Windows Media Player to answer the following. Go to your library. Answer, no matter how embarrasing it is.

How many songs: 4808. This isn't the whole library, just my playlist, but it does have most of my stuff in it. Also, my playlist is like five years old and has a LOT of duplicates on it. I'm looking forward to getting a new computer and fixing it all up properly. *bounce* Which reminds me I have to burn all the music off this comp onto a DVD soon...
Total time: 308 hours and change, which seems... kind of large? Maybe I'm not reading it right.

Sort by song title:
First Song: "Growltiger's Last Stand" From Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The reason it's first is it actually has the quotation marks in the filename. Don't ask me...
Last Song: Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie.

Sort by time:
Shortest Song: "They Go The Mustard Out" from the Once More With Feeling OST, 17 seconds. :D!
Longest Song: "Ode To Joy", Beethoven, 23:39.

Sort by artist:
First Artist: "Unknown artist." (LA song by Beth Hart. But "Unknown" goes on for aaaages and includes Paul Simon and Cabaret and Shrek and allsorts.) First actual artist: 3 Doors Down.
Last Artist: Zoe Hart, who was (presumably) Child Cosette in some Les Mis production, since she's singing Castle On a Cloud. Again, last actual artist: Zed. *AMUSED*

Sort by album:
First Album: "Unknown Album." After the, again, tonnes of these, "1" (The first disc we uploaded onto the computer, presumably) which I have a sneaking suspicion is actually the same album [livejournal.com profile] sennical has in this position; the Beatles' collected works, which are collected by year, so "1962-1966 [Disc 1]".
Last Album: Zanna, Don't! I think [livejournal.com profile] lordofchaos sent me a song from this and it's hilarous. :D

Top Three Most Played Songs: Um, because I'm doing this on the family computer, this is more "songs all six-to-eight of us love," and the top three are:
121 (!!!) plays, "Redemption Songs" by Bob Marley and the Wailers
94 plays, "Home Again" by Shihad (LOVE this song a lot.)
89 plays, "No Woman No Cry" by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

I find this very anthropologically interesting, so I'm going to do... some more:

Top three songs that I think I have contributed more than half the plays to:
55, "Killer Queen" by Queen
52, "Road Trippin'" by RHCP
50, "Delight" by Bic Runga

Top three songs that I'm definitely the only one to have played:
43, "Lydia" by Fur Patrol. I like this song a lot.
35, "If She Wants Me" by Belle and Sebastian
27, "The Lady is a Vamp" by the Spice Girls

Top three songs I definitely uploaded onto the computer:
78, "Let it be," the Beatles
(A whole bunch of Queen starting with) 66, "The Show Must Go On," Queen
50, "Delight", Big Runga.

First song that comes up on Shuffle:
"Don't Phunk With My Heart", Black Eyed Peas. *blush*

Search:
"sex," how many songs come up? - 3.
"Sexy Sadie", The Beatles
"Sexed Up," Robbie Williams
"Bodies," The Sex Pistols

"death," how many songs come up? - 45. Forty songs by Death Cab For Cutie, plus
"Homecoming: The Death of St Jimmy/East 12th St/Nobody Likes You/Rock" by Green Day (and may I just say? A totally unnecessarily long song title)
"Fantine's Death: Come to Me" from Les Miserables
"Creeping Death" by Metallica
"Death of the First Born" from The Prince of Egypt
"All Eyez on Me" by 2pac (NOT ACTUALLY MINE) from an album which has "deathrow presents" in it or something.

"love," how many songs come up? - 247. Notably/Interestingly/Randomly:
"Freddy My Love" from Grease
"As Lovers Go" by Dashboard Confessional
"Do You Think We Could Fall In Love" from Zanna, Don't!
"Bye Bye Love" by Simon and Garfunkel
"Love" by the Smashing Pumpkins

"you," how many songs come up? - 494. *g* Again, notably or interestingly:
"Nothing Wrong With You" by the Finn Brothers
"Will You Be My Girl?" by jet
Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" album
"Smile Like You Mean it" by The Killers
"I Want You To Want Me" by Letters to Cleo
"You" by Bic Runga

Well. That was fun. *g* Also. HEY! If you want to see me before I leave, book me up now because my weekend is insane. :P

Bic Runga: Birds

This is just a preliminary reviewish thinky thing, so don’t take it too seriously, okey dokey? And a quick recommendation: like so much of Bic’s opus, this albums is best listened to in silence and turned up quite loud, so you can hear everything, at least for the first hearing or so. Um, this will contain spoilers for Birds, if you, you know, believe in spoilers for music. I know I prefer to listen to an album firsthand before reading reviews and things so… Anyway, first I’ll blether for a bit about the album as a whole, and then I’ll go through it track by track and say something about each of them. Okay? Okay.

Disclaimer: All the lyrics quoted here from Birds come directly from my own hearing, as there’s no lyric resource around; if you’re hearing it differently do mention it. Lyrics quoted from Beautiful Collision and Drive come from www.bicrunga.com. All the lyrics quoted herein are the property of Bic Runga: go out and buy the CD, it’s really worth it. I LOVE it.

here goes! )

In an attempt to spread the love of Bic Runga overseas, I've sent [livejournal.com profile] bad_mushroom half a dozen assorted Bic Runga tunes hoping to create a fangirl. :) I YSI'd them, so if anyone else wants a clicky or two: (all in mp3 except for Gracie which is m4a)

Sorry
This is a song from her first album "Drive" which is much more rock-y than most of her stuff; I like it because it's fun, and sent it off because it's different.

Sway
This is also from "Drive", and it's the song that made Bic famous. It's universally loved and very awesome. :P

Delight
This is "Delight", which is the last "Drive" song I sent. It's different from.. pretty much anything. I'm sending it because it's totally GORGEOUS and very, very good. :P Mind you, I think everything she does is good.

The Be All and End All
This is from her second album "Beautiful Collisions." She kind of changed her style for that album; I sent this one because you said you liked folk, and this one is sort-of folky. Although maybe it's more country. ;) Anyway, it's cool.

Election Night
This is "Election Night" which is my favourite song off "Beautiful Collisions." It's very different in tone to "The Be All and End All," it's way more... lush, I guess. (Actually there are some versions of some of her songs that she did with the Christchurch Symphony that are STUNNINGLY gorgeous but I haven't got them on the computer. There's this one that actually uses timpani _playing the tune_. It's SO awesome. Anyway.) Where was I? Oh yeah, "Election Night". It might be kind of poppy, I don't know, but I like it. :)

Gracie
Windows Media Player will play m4a, if you're wondering.
This is Gracie, which is from the Beautiful Collision bonus disc. It's one of my favourite of her more rare tunes, I don't know why- well, yes I do, it's because it reveals this really nice eye for detail and daily life which I love in both poetry and lyrics. So yeah. :)

Enjoy, all! :)

I've also posted my third [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 piece: Poetry and Practice, which "When She Glows" was supposed to be companion to. P&P was beta'd SUPERBLY by [livejournal.com profile] chattycheese and [livejournal.com profile] dragonwire, to whom all praise and adoration. XD

Crediting is nice, commenting is better, hotlinking sucks beyond belief. :) Also, a lot of these are bases; feel free to customise yourself, or ask if you want me to put text on them and I'm happy to oblige.

mmmph, so, finally got hands on a Cabaret recording from Lucy. And I was listening through and reading the lyrics (And, man, some of this stuff is SO good. If You Could See Her Through My Eyes is so frightening... man, I love this musical) But the worst bit? The movie version- and I think this is the movie soundtrack- missed like five of the best songs: Don't Tell Mama, Married, It Couldn't Please Me More (The Pineapple Song), Perfectly Marvellous, What Would You Do, So What- actually, it looks like they mostly skipped the Frau Schneider songs, which makes me incredibly distressed.

So, um, long, round-about request- if anyone has any of the above songs? I'll swap you any music I might have (or can get off the Hub) for any of these. :D
labellementeuse: a girl sits at a desk in front of a window, chewing a pencil (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] absent is doing a really cool thing in her journal where she's asking everyone on her f-list to comment with a song that really speaks to them- a current favourite or an all-time favourite or just something that really describes them- and upload it for her so she can put them all in a playlist and know which song means what person. I think it's a totally awesome idea so I'd like to do the same thing! If you think I already have the song, don't worry about uploading it, of course, just name it. :D

Also, Alice, I think the reason no-one's pimping your Dirty Little Secret meme is that no-one wants to thing their f-list would see their dirty little secrets. On which topic, you all will never know if I did or did not. ;)

Third thing: I am seriously enjoying The Postal Service's Such Great Heights so much right now. Can't YSI it but if you all can get it I advise that you do. :D

PS: [livejournal.com profile] gianp, [livejournal.com profile] lady_larla,[livejournal.com profile] sixth_light, [livejournal.com profile] thinkaholic, [livejournal.com profile] tisis: you guys save me. you know why. ♥

AND.

I totally love the illegal filesharing network UCHalls does NOT have. Because I am kind of an obsessive completist with regards to music, is the thing, and it has been a source of serious angst for me that there are a number of tracks that Bic Runga has recorded- B-sides and extras on singles discs and bonus discs and so forth- that I simply have not been able to get my hot little hands on.

But some totally wonderful person on the Hub-which-doesn't-exist TOTALLY had the Drive bonus disc (I have Drive, Beautiful Collisions, the Beautiful Collisions bonus disc, and Bic Runga live with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, which is BTW a really beautiful recording, unusual and pretty) AND AND AND now I have:
You
Welcome to my Kitchen
Close the Door, Put Out the Light
Dust
Ordinary Girl
Making A Scene

and a cool acoustic version of Sway and the "doordashan remix" of Drive which is bizarre and awesome. You can NEVER have too many recordings of Sway, if you haven't heard it you're dead to me. In fact I will YSI it on Monday, because omg the idea that there are people out there who haven't heard it just makes me CRY.

Still haven't got Lonely Lola, Cherry Cola Girl, i don't mean it, all fall down, making a scene, or take it out sometimes. I'm not ashamed to beg, because I really am that obsessive.

Um anyway. MUSIC GOODNESS. *puts on repeat*
